Government makes Aadhaar number mandatory to apply for PAN, notifies amended income tax rules

The government on Wednesday notified amended income tax rules and made linking of existing Aadhaar numbers with Permanent Account Number (PAN). Also, the government has made quoting of Aadhaar number or enrolment ID mandatory to apply for PAN.
On June 10, the Supreme Court had partially stayed the provision of the Income Tax Act that makes linking of Aadhaar number with PAN mandatory.
The bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan had upheld Section 139 AA subject to the final verdict on the privacy issues.
"We're not touching the aspect of privacy under Article 21 as it is already pending before the constitutional bench," justice Sikri had said.
Making it more friendly for taxpayers to link their Aadhaar with the  Permanent Account Number (PAN), the Income Tax department had earlier launched a new e-facility. The process has become mandatory for filing IT returns now.
